The LOSSAN rail corridor stretches 351 miles from San Diego to San Luis Obispo, with the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, freight, commuter, and long-distance trains sharing the tracks and certain stations. Ongoing construction projects keep the infrastructure in top condition and contribute to overall improvements in rail travel along the corridor. Larger projects require tracks or stations to be closed so crews can perform necessary work, which can temporarily affect train service.

Track Closures

Full-Service Shutdown - January 11-12, 2025

There will be no Pacific Surfliner trains operating during the weekend of January 11-12, 2025 due to Metrolink and NCTD track closures both north and south of Los Angeles. No bus service will be available between San Luis Obispo and San Diego. Please plan ahead for alternate travel arrangements.

Scheduled Track Work - January 25-26: Weekend Track Closures in Orange and San Diego Counties

On January 25-26, 2025, Metrolink and NCTD are temporarily closing tracks south of Irvine to progress needed capital projects and for regular track maintenance. To accommodate Pacific Surfliner passengers during this period, alternative bus connections will be arranged for travel to and from destinations south of Irvine.

The following train schedule adjustments will be implemented:

Southbound

- Southbound trains 572 and 586 will be canceled.
- Southbound train 794 will terminate in Los Angeles on Friday evening (Jan. 24). Bus connection will be available.

Northbound

- Northbound trains 573 and 587 will be canceled.
- Northbound train 761 will originate in Los Angeles on Monday morning (Jan. 27). No bus connection will be available.
- On Monday, Jan. 27, first northbound train from San Diego will depart Santa Fe Depot at 6:01 am.
- Northbound bus 5811 has been added to the schedule for a later departure from San Diego.

The bus connections will be as follows:

Southbound

- Irvine (IRV) to Oceanside (OSD)
- Irvine (IRV) to Solana Beach (SOL)
- Irvine (IRV) to Old Town San Diego (OLT) and Santa Fe Depot (SAN)
  Note that southbound passengers may request stop in OLT for drop offs only.

Northbound

- Oceanside (OSD) to Irvine (IRV)
- Solana Beach (SOL) to Irvine (IRV)
- Santa Fe Depot (SAN) to Irvine (IRV)
  Note that there will be no northbound service available at OLT. Passengers are advised to use the trolley from OLT to SAN for the bus connection if required.

San Diego Travel Advisory: Del Mar Bluffs
Updated - December 16, 2024

Ongoing construction work on the Del Mar Phase Five project, which is stabilizing the railroad right-of-way along bluffs in Del Mar, may cause periodic schedule changes on Sunday nights through Tuesday mornings effecting service to/from Downtown San Diego’s Santa Fe and Old Town San Diego stations.

BAGGAGE SERVICE SUSPENDED

Funding limitations caused by extended track closures which were in place for an extended period have made it necessary to make temporary adjustments to the Pacific Surfliner service. We are doing all we can to preserve vital intercounty transportation connections and provide a travel experience that our passengers will enjoy.

The adjustments below are effective until further notice.

Checked baggage is not currently available on Pacific Surfliner trains. Luggage may still be carried and stored on board. You may bring two personal items that measure up to 14” x 11” x 7” each, and weigh up to 25 pounds each. You may also bring two carry-on bags that measure up to 28" x 22" x 11" each, and weigh up to 50 pounds each.

FULLERTON STATION RENOVATION PROJECT

The Fullerton Station Renovation Project is underway and is expected to last through April 2025. The station will remain open, but the west side of the station will not be accessible to customers.

TEMPORARY TICKET WINDOW CLOSURES

Pacific Surfliner trains continue to serve all stations according to the schedules. However, ticket windows are currently closed at the following stations:

Solana Beach: Nearest staffed stations is Santa Fe Depot (San Diego)
Oceanside: Nearest staffed stations is Santa Fe Depot (San Diego)
San Juan Capistrano: Nearest staffed station is Fullerton
Santa Ana: Nearest staffed station is Fullerton
Irvine: Nearest staffed station is Fullerton
Anaheim: Nearest staffed station is Fullerton

FAQs

Purchase tickets using the online booking tool (Book Now button at the top of the page), the Amtrak app, or by phone at 1-800-USA-RAIL. Irvine, Santa Ana, and Anaheim also have self-serve ticket kiosks (located inside the station building) where passengers can make new reservations, adjust existing reservations, or print out tickets.

Passengers without a smartphone or access to a ticket kiosk may call 1-800-USA-Rail to purchase a ticket. The Amtrak agent can provide a confirmation code once a trip is booked. That code can be given to the conductor on board in lieu of a printed or electronic ticket.
Unreserved Coach tickets can be saved and used at a later date (up to one year from the date listed on the ticket) without making any changes to the reservation. Some restrictions may apply, such as when the trains are all-reserved on peak travel days.

Business Class reservations do need to be updated if plans change. If you made your reservation online, visit Amtrak.com and select “Modify Trip”. Log into your Amtrak Guest Rewards account or enter your reservation number and email address to make changes to your trip. You can also call 800-USA-RAIL in advance of your ticketed departure.

Pacific Surfliner tickets are considered "Flexible Fares". Tickets can be cancelled with a full refund to original form of payment with no fees if canceled before departure. There are no change fees. You can get more details on cancellation policies on Amtrak.com.

If your train is delayed and you are still waiting at the station, you can look for updates via electronic signage.
