The LOSSAN rail corridor stretches 351 miles from San Diego to San Luis Obispo, with the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, freight, commuter, and long-distance trains sharing the tracks and certain stations. Ongoing construction projects keep the infrastructure in top condition and contribute to overall improvements in rail travel along the corridor. Larger projects require tracks or stations to be closed so crews can perform necessary work, which can temporarily affect train service.

Track Closures

Planned Track Closures Between Irvine and San Diego, Effective October 12-13
Updated - October 3, 2024

Due to track work being performed, Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner services will be adjusted between Irvine to San Diego on Saturday and Sunday. Pacific Surfliner service for this weekend will be modified as follows:

Southbound

Trains 572 & 586: Temporarily suspended
Train 562: Train will terminate at Irvine. No bus bridge will be provided between Irvine and San Diego for this train.
Trains 564, 770, 774, 580, 784, & 790: Bus bridges will be provided with direct connections to each of the following locations - Irvine to Oceanside, Irvine to Solana Beach, or Irvine to Old Town (drop off only) and San Diego.
Train 794: Train will terminate in Los Angeles. A bus bridge will be provided between Los Angeles and San Diego, making all Pacific Surfliner stops except San Juan Capistrano.

Northbound

Trains 573 & 587: Temporarily suspended
Trains 765, 769, 777, 581, 785, & 591: Bus bridges will be provided with direct connections to each of the following locations - Oceanside to Irvine, Solana Beach to Irvine, and San Diego to Irvine.
Train 761: Train will originate in Los Angeles. No bus bridge will be available between San Diego and Los Angeles for this train.
Train 595: Train will originate at Irvine. No bus bridge will be available between San Diego and Irvine for this train.

Railroad to Close in Del Mar on Certain Days for an Extended Time

From May 19, 2024, expect changes to Pacific Surfliner service at Downtown San Diego's Santa Fe and Old Town San Diego stations due to construction for the Del Mar Phase Five project.

No service to Santa Fe Depot (SAN) and Old Town San Diego (OLT) stations on Sunday evenings, Monday mornings and evenings, and Tuesday mornings for approximately two years on select weeks.

BAGGAGE SERVICE SUSPENDED

Funding limitations caused by extended track closures which were in place for an extended period have made it necessary to make temporary adjustments to the Pacific Surfliner service. We are doing all we can to preserve vital intercounty transportation connections and provide a travel experience that our passengers will enjoy.

The adjustments below are effective until further notice.

Checked baggage is not currently available on Pacific Surfliner trains. Luggage may still be carried and stored on board. You may bring two personal items that measure up to 14” x 11” x 7” each, and weigh up to 25 pounds each. You may also bring two carry-on bags that measure up to 28" x 22" x 11" each, and weigh up to 50 pounds each.

FULLERTON STATION RENOVATION PROJECT

The Fullerton Station Renovation Project is underway and is expected to last through April 2025. The station will remain open, but the west side of the station will not be accessible to customers.

TEMPORARY TICKET WINDOW CLOSURES

Pacific Surfliner trains continue to serve all stations according to the schedules. However, ticket windows are currently closed at the following stations:

Solana Beach: Nearest staffed stations is Santa Fe Depot (San Diego)
Oceanside: Nearest staffed stations is Santa Fe Depot (San Diego)
San Juan Capistrano: Nearest staffed station is Fullerton
Santa Ana: Nearest staffed station is Fullerton
Irvine: Nearest staffed station is Fullerton
Anaheim: Nearest staffed station is Fullerton

FAQs

Purchase tickets using the online booking tool (Book Now button at the top of the page), the Amtrak app, or by phone at 1-800-USA-RAIL. Irvine, Santa Ana, and Anaheim also have self-serve ticket kiosks (located inside the station building) where passengers can make new reservations, adjust existing reservations, or print out tickets.

Passengers without a smartphone or access to a ticket kiosk may call 1-800-USA-Rail to purchase a ticket. The Amtrak agent can provide a confirmation code once a trip is booked. That code can be given to the conductor on board in lieu of a printed or electronic ticket.
Unreserved Coach tickets can be saved and used at a later date (up to one year from the date listed on the ticket) without making any changes to the reservation. Some restrictions may apply, such as when the trains are all-reserved on peak travel days.

Business Class reservations do need to be updated if plans change. If you made your reservation online, visit Amtrak.com and select “Modify Trip”. Log into your Amtrak Guest Rewards account or enter your reservation number and email address to make changes to your trip. You can also call 800-USA-RAIL in advance of your ticketed departure.

Pacific Surfliner tickets are considered "Flexible Fares". Tickets can be cancelled with a full refund to original form of payment with no fees if canceled before departure. There are no change fees. You can get more details on cancellation policies on Amtrak.com.

You can also check train status on Amtrak.com (Train Status button / clock icon at the top of the page) or the Amtrak app, or the Track Your Train Map. If your train is delayed and you are still waiting at the station, you can look for updates via electronic signage.
